So this is about where we left off... The Lieutenant Colonel stood haughtily in the doorway, his presence imposing, trying to make sense of what was going on, which was:
...his radio had gone errant; it was more so the fact that he heard loud music from the hall, followed it, only to find a strange young man pounding on the keyboard like Tchiakofsky, bobbing his head to broadways tunes from Carousel (thanks NPR-what a treat!) making himself right at home.
I rather flamboyantly spun around on my swivel chair and proudly smiled at him, as though I had just been awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize for discovering the double-helix. New meaning is given to the 21st century military catch phrase “An Army of One.”
My jubilant gaze was not exactly reciprocated. He stared at me as though I had crawled from the alien craft wreckage that surely must have crashed on the Texas State football field, as though he must have walked into some sort of ill-fated Star Trek episode. Our following conversation didn’t live long, nor did it prosper.
Me: Oh, I’m from Houston. I’m working on your reports.
Him: (silence)
Me: My name is Michael. I have a blog. It’s dailyrice.blogspot.com and this encounter will probably be on it tonight.
Him: (more of the same)
I extend my hand in his direction, though it’s not so much to shake hands. It was more to accept the Nobel Prize award that he surely was holding behind his back, waiting to award me.
