Sunday, Lazy Sunday

Landstuhl Castle 024
View from atop the castle... the town below is Landstuhl and the hospital is about one mile away on the other big hill

When the birds woke me up this morning, I felt two things: One, that it was a nice change from my usual 4:45am wake up call courtesy my watch's alarm. And secondly, that I had not a single thing planned for the entire day. My plate was empty.

What to do, what to do??!! Well, without a car and without a friend the options might seem limited, but it's quite the contrary: They are limitless. So I ventured a trip to the castle. I stopped by the coffee shop and one machiatto later I was taking in the panoramic of what's become home.

One euro got me in the gates and I spent about an hour roaming around the castle, basking in the sun and climbing on the walls. There's not really security or anything in Germany and all places are open to explore however you want. No discernable boundaries whatsoever. Good news for those who hate rules. Good news for me.

I found a soccer game in the late afternoon next to what I mistook for an old mansion. All the kids later told me they live there--it's an orphanage. It was a blast hanging out with them and yelling absurd things in broken German like, "Ich bin ein Fenster (I am a window) after scoring goals. They Tuesday through Thursday at 3:30 so I might have to sneak out of work a bit early (yeah right).

The temp hovers right around 70 and flowers are blooming everywhere. This place is such a far cry from the barren, bone chilling winter that plane dropped me off in.

Climbing castle walls??? Awesome! I'm going to Romania for a week in September; if I find a way to hop a couple of borders, could I stay at your place? Maybe I can read some original Martin Luther or Kirkegard while there.

Philosophizing to no end (not one that's in sight anyway),

Yeah, you sure can. Although reading German is not gonna be easy. There were so many sweet jug holds on the castle walls you wouldn't believe it. Luther was nuts.... Rebecca and I went to the place where he did his thing--he was out of his mind. Philosophy is quite useless.

my mother used to tell me to "be a lebling sfester" or something like that. (I spelled it phonetically the way I remember it so it's probably incredibly wrong). I think it means loving/lovely sister. But she also calls me dirty names in german too. I don't remember them though.

Perhaps lieben schwester or something... I'm sure Anna will correct both of us on this one :)
But yeah Jess, I'll have some really nice things to say to you when I return, like "Sie sind wunderschon und komisch." It's good stuff, I swear.
