X-Evil and Satirical Musings

"Nothing which implies contradiction falls under the omnipotence of God."
-St. Thomas

"Carelessness kills; complacency is murder."
-Proverbs, Ch. 1

I have a confession to make, and regrettably it involves what has come to be the bane of my existence: Halo II, a first class ticket to complacency. Last night, after an early Friday night evening spent reading Miracles and The Problem of Evil in Dan's dorm room, we decided to head over to Krunky's (no spelling error there...he's actually named Krunky... I apologize).

What followed was an ill -fated game of Halo II in which I was terribly defeated, both literally and metaphorically. Each errant bullet dispersed from my dual automatic rifles came to symbolize a brain cell; ultimately, alas, my magazine, along with my soul, was emptied. It was my first and last game of Halo II.

After retiring to the bedroom I began to formulate a new question in regards to the problem of evil. The Judeo-Christian God is cleverly referred to by philosophy types as an O3 God, which is short for omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent (you save eleven syllables... I counted!).

Anyways, I feel that the pressing postmodern philosophical issue of our time in regards to the existence of evil has transformed from questions of reconciling God to the apparently senseless existence of natural evil (the Titanic, disease, droughts) or moral evil (holocaust, rape, Stalin purges) to what I will call X-Evil (I think you play Halo on X-Box, no?) Or to put this in standard form: (modus-ponens naturally)

The Problem of X-Evil:

An O3 God would not allow such a game as Halo II to exist
Halo II does exist
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore, there is not an O3 God
