Were Not in Texas Any More
It's four pm and I'm calling my boyfriend, Michael, to find out if we
are going to Kansas or not. He still doesn't know. He can't decide if
twelve hours in a Trans am is good enough for us, four that are going.
He told me not to pack or doing anything just yet, don't want to be
too prepared. He went to go work out and leave me to ponder weather to
do work or screw it because we are going to Kansas. Michael used to
go to the University of Kansas last year. Then he came here to be with
his dad. So he wanted to go back and see all his friends and see the
college that he loved.
Now its five and I finally get the call. We are going to Kansas, pack
only one bag (that's all that will fit) and we are leaving at 6. Holy
shit. Clothes I have no clothes to wear or bring. Shit, shit, shit.
Why when you need something you never have it. I'm running around my
dorm room, which is the size of a normal person's bathroom, trying to
get everything together. Then when I can't find anything I start
running around my hall asking people if I could borrow some lotion for
the weekend. Yep, I got some odd looks at first but I explained.
Then I remembered he said only one bag. I don't think so! I don't
care who you are but you cannot pack everything you need for a four
day road trip with 3 guys in to a back pack. I had just gotten out of
the shower, so I had to get dressed and do all these things before I
was anywhere near ready. Then Michael calls me, "Can you go online and
get directions to Kansas?" We don't even have fucking directions. Oh
my God, you boys are so unorganized. At this time it's about twenty
till six. I'm still trying to get everything into one bag. I finally
give up and get another one. Freaking out, I search and search to find
a website to get directions but I can't get any. I call him back and I
can tell he's kind of pissed but he is also trying to get everything
together in time, too. So he says, "That's okay I call one of the
other guys that are going to do it." "Oh thank you, thank you," I say
to myself. And I continue shoving everything I could possibly need
into my little bags. Always be prepared.
It's exactly five fifty five. I have five minuets to get down to
Michaels room. Grab everything I need go say bye to a friend and go
downstairs. Surprise, surprise. He's not even close to being ready and
the other guy, Andy, isn't down here either. I then have to find
everything that he can't find, like his glasses, shirts, and some
boxers. The boy can't find anything. I then have to call his friend in
Kansas, Matt, who I have never met never talked, or heard too much
about. Of course, he's not there, and I'm talking to one of his
roommates that could care less about what's going on.
By now it's about six thirty and we have got nothing going for us at
the moment. Michael is being a little testy and I think to myself what
I am I doing going to Kansas with three guys and not telling anyone,
like my parents, what going on. And if he's going to be like this I
certainly don't want to go. Finally, Andy gets here. I'm so relived
now he won't be as bitchy. I swear men have more pms then women! I go
and get some money from an ATM and let them talk about whatever they
need to get in a better mood. They great ones are ready, finally.
Usually men have to wait on the ladies. Not here it's the other way
around.
John, the guy that is going just because none of us have a car to
drive there, has been waiting outside for about a good half hour. We
make the walk down one flight of stairs with all our stuff. We see
John's car and start to cram everything in the joke of a trunk.
Already knowing my role of backseat behind the driver I throw my stuff
that I can hold right there. Now, Michael and Andy decide they want
snacks. Great lets go get snacks. You did want to go to Kansas, not
just pretend right?? Boys, gezz what to do. John and I move the car
from the side of the road, well the cops kind of made us.
Andy and Michael come back form there little shopping spree and we all
climb into our spots; me backseat behind the driver, Michael in the
driver seat, Andy is in the back seat next to me, and John has
passenger. We are off into the wild blue Houston traffic at seven pm.
We got through downtown Houston with no problem. But when we got close
to Spring the traffic explodes right before our eyes. Red lights light
up the sky. I-45 is killer right there and its just dead stop.
I believe that we finally got out of the areas near Houston about ten.
It was just a strait path to Dallas then we had to bust out the
directions just in case. Somewhere between Dallas and Oklahoma the
boys had to pull over on to the side of the road and make a mini film,
with Rocky IV theme music. It was incredibly ridiculous and cold
outside. And we finally got back on our way.
It's about twelve or so and we stop and get some gas and find a real
bathroom for the lady of the car. Then pop on over to the Wendy's and
get some chicken nuggets and ask this white trash how she felt about
gays in the military, of course getting all this on film. We switch
drivers in Oklahoma and Michael gets in the back with me. So we can
make out and go to sleep in the back till we have to stop for gas
again. This time in Kansas. Yes! We made it this far. I can't believe
I'm here. Still don't know what I'm doing with these three boys in
Kansas. I must have gone crazy. We all start to wake up with the
realization that we are so close, plus it's about freezing outside. We
make our way to the University of Kansas campus about six in the
morning. Michael shows us around some of the places on campus. We are
wide awake by now all so curious about this new place.
After a little driving around we go to find the street his friend,
Matt, lives on. We pass the house on the one way street about five
times before actually finding it. We climb out of the bite size car.
Walk to the front door, where Matt is wide awake waiting for us to
come. We spring in and met this guy we keep hearing about and who is
letting us stay in his house. Then race to the bathroom and bring our
stuff in. John and Andy go crash downstairs. Michael and I stay up for
another hour or so talking to Matt. I hate being polite, I just
wanted to go to sleep. They eventually both go to sleep. And it
finally sinks in…I'm in Kansas with my boyfriend, and no one knows.
It's almost like a secret get away. The twelve hour drive has ended
and now its time to rest for the events to come.
