Dear Music Enthusiasts,
A good friend of mine recently suggested I post the lyrics to a favorite song of mine, since afterall, things like that can tell you the most about a person. I'd have to say that lyrically, this is one of the strongest songs penned by Mr. Joel, aka the Piano Man. Well, for that matter, aka ""the last person you'd want to designate as the driver."
Forgive this lackluster blog but I just got done with a lecture in which we discussed Sharia (Islamic Law) and how women are stoned to death in Africa for adultery and hands chopped off for stealing. In addition, we discussed the ongoing genocide and ethnic battles that claim the lives of hundreds of Africans on a daily basis. The most disheartening part of it is, that despite the fact that these men, women, and children are dying (as I type this feeble post from the comforts of the computer lab) in excruciating pain, it evokes no feelings in me.
Sure, sure I'd like to help them, but of course I don't. Our words in class are light as feathers. The unbearable lightness of being I believe Kundera termed it. Anyways, I've got to get to class to catch the remainder of The Gods Must Be Crazy and write notes to Grace...
So enjoy the lyrics (mom),
Michael Michael
Summer Highland Falls
They say that these are not the best of times
But they're the only times I've ever known
And I believe there is a time for meditation
In cathedrals of our own
Now I have seen that sad surrender in my lover's eyes
And I can only stand apart and sympathize
For we are always what our situations hand us
It's either sadness or euphoria
So we'll argue and we'll compromise and realize
That nothing's ever changed
For all our mutual experience
Our separate conclusions are the same
Now we are forced to recognize our inhumanity
Our reason co-exists with our insanity
And though we choose between reality and madness
It's either sadness or euphoria
How thoughtlessly we dissipate our energy
Perhaps we don't fulfill each other's fantasies
And as we stand upon the ledges of our lives
With our respective similarities
It's either sadness or euphoria
