My good friend Casey who is finishing up at University of Kansas really summed up the beauty of the online journal, so I'll open with his quote (borrowed from my email):
"Anyways, good luck with school and the online autobiography (really a
fantastic idea, immortalizing yourself with daily snapshots of the mental
eulogies of the living)"
He went onto playfully chastise me for the self indulgence saying we should all be so lucky to have these immortal daily snap shots :) And now, for the blog (drumroll please)...
Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all Ages,
It seems as though another weekend has passed us by and while I am not proud of this, my blog entailing the events of it is being typed retroactively. But if there is any good that can come of these hitherto undivulged anecdotes it’s that they can be told in hindsight, which as you know as well as I do, is 20/20. But enough with the superfluous rhetoric…
Weekend Events (in no particular order or precedence)
1)Army-If anything is parallel to the relentless ennui it would be the sheer predictability of the day. One exception to this fundamental rule of the military is that we did take the physical fitness test, which is one of my few chances to shine. It is for this event and only this event that I awake from my lackadaisical stupor and expel what little, dormant energy harbored inside me. My two-mile run was what really turned the heads and lifted the eyebrows of my fellow soldiers, as I coasted through the finish line with a time of just over 13 minutes. It was only during my second victory lap that I realized that I might be being a bit ostentatious and brazen, but isn’t that also the whole point of an online journal… And yet another disclaimer: Once again, the audience of this journal varies greatly so I cannot stress enough that this is generally tongue in cheek. OK, had to say that.
2)Birthday Party-Saturday afternoon my little sister Madeline McCoy had her first birthday party, an important event in a young girls life to be sure. It was great fun and although I fear she may not remember it, this blogger account of it will always will be floating through cyberspace to serve as proof, which is comforting to say the least. Many distinguished guests graced us with their presence, most notably Doug and Angie Fashenpour from Austin. (They used to be Mema’s neighbors in Houston and served as my only friends, along with their twin daughters and son, for the first few months of my sojourn in H-Town)
Anywho, the highlight of the game was unarguably the highly Kennedyesque touch football game which took place Saturday night in which my favorite all star running back/quarterback/wide receiver Sarah Meyer and I nearly pulled off one of the greatest upsets of the season. By season of course, I mean a single game. It’s been said that sometimes when you loose you really win, and I think that is apropos in reference to the stoic performance we turned in. In fact there is talk of pulling the new football movie, Friday Night Lights, from theatres to remake it and re-release it under the title of Sarah and Michael Almost Won a Football Game at a Birthday Party. It leaves you a bit marble mouthed but I think we all get the idea.
OK friends. It’s off to bed for what is these days a relative eternity, nearly seven hours. I hope these blogs are getting some smiles or laughs or even both simultaneously. So,
Until next time, I remain, proud teammate of Sarah Meyer, friend of the star actor Andy Petruzzo and all the kids from CRU (in San Marcos) ((Texas)),
M.W. RICE
Almost forgot, your random quote for the day:
"Blessed are the forgetful, for they get even the better of their blunders"
(I wonder if the advent of the "blog" would cause Nietzsche to revise his now popular epigram ((thanks Eternal Sunshine)). Actually, I suppose it would be the least of his worries.
